Currently writing this at the end of May, 2025, an overview of recent activity shows a renewed effort to complete The Obelisk, after a winter spent in-doors working on the After Firenze pieces. The Obelisk, begun last Spring 2024, is a four sided, free-standing, portable monument covered in figurative carving. It is a continuation of the architectural themes considered in the previously completed The Arch and The Cabinet of Curiousity.
The Book of Umm continues with over 2500 gouache and water-color paintings in the series as of this writing. Please refer to holzman.david on Instagram to follow the Umms. There’s a new one posted every second day. Working the Umms is a daily ritual for me, seven days a week, for the past 13 years.
The woodcuts continue. Since the summer of 2022 the work pattern has evolved into a seasonal process of printing small editions of woodcut novels in the warm months, work that has been developed in woodblock form over the cold months. The first title in this series, “Diary of a Birdman,” was printed in early Fall 22 in an edition of 6. “Faces of Evil,” and “A Man Going Mad in a Room” followed in 2023. “A Slice of Pizza in Kramatorsk,” the title page of which is featured above, was printed in the summer of 2024. I am currently printing an edition of “Vitaly: The Scream,” the new book with a focus on Ukraine, available in the Fall.
